Braces

Braces

“Braces” is the collective term used to describe the metal brackets and wires that are used to orthodontically move teeth.

The brackets are bonded to the teeth using orthodontic adhesive. Each bracket acts like a “handle” for each tooth. Wires are then inserted through the brackets and tied into place. The initial archwires have an elastic memory. When the wire is engaged into each bracket, the wire is temporarily deformed. As the wire rebounds into shape, it pulls the tooth (via the “handle” into alignment).

There are many different types of metal braces available in the market place. Although some companies claim that their brackets will move teeth faster, there is no reliable evidence to support this. The rate of tooth movement will mostly depend on the patients individual biology, and not the type of brace used. At Clifton Hill Orthoodontics, we prefer to use small low profile braces. Not only do they look nice, but they also reduce the risk of rubbing and irritation. A gold bracket alternative is also available should you so desire!

One of the highlights of going through orthodontic treatment is the ability to choose different colours. We have 20 different colours of elastomeric ties. These are used to hold the wire into each brace. These colours can be changed at every visit (approximately 6-8 weekly).
